The recent election of Salum Khalfani Bar'wani as Tanzania's first Albino MP is commendable. It's a sign of increasing tolerance of diversity.
I'm especially thrilled that Bar'wani won against a veteran ruling party incumbent, according to this AFP report. Across Africa, it's never easy for the opposition to win against the ruling party.
But the the election of one Albino MP in Tanzania is enough to protect the human rights and dignity of Africa's Albinos.
In recent years, dozens of albinos have been killed and dismembered in a number of African countries due to a widespread belief that charms made from their body parts bring good fortune and prosperity.
Human rights-centered education could start a real progressive march against this sickening belief.
